Vaccinations

Young animals are like kids–keeping them safe and happy is a never-ending job. Pet vaccinations are a relatively inexpensive but essential way to protect their health.

In addition to preventing many life-threatening illnesses, pet vaccinations can prevent diseases prevalent in wildlife and those that can be passed to humans. It’s essential to administer vaccinations when pets are puppies and kittens because their young immune systems are still developing and need protection to stay healthy.

While any medical treatment involves a small degree of risk, the benefits far outweigh any potential side effects of vaccinations. Adverse reactions are rare and usually mild and short-term when they do occur. Vaccinating your pet also contributes to the broader community’s health by helping to control and eliminate contagious diseases. Regular vaccination schedules, tailored to your pet’s specific needs, ensure optimal protection throughout their life.

Customized for Your Pet & Your Life

Which vaccines should your pet have? Core vaccines are those recommended—and possibly mandated by law—for most pets. Core vaccines include:

  • Rabies (dogs and cats)
  • DA2PPV – Distemper, Hepatitis, Adenovirus 2, Parvo and Parainfluenza (dogs)
  • FVRCP – Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia (cats)

We recommend Bordetella and canine influenza shots for dogs who frequent dog parks, boarding kennels, or any place where they socialize with other canines. We recommend yearly Leptospirosis vaccines. There have been positive cases in the area from local wildlife in backyards..

Even pets who live primarily indoors should be vaccinated, as they are still at risk of exposure to diseases from outside sources. Indoor pets can still come into contact with harmful pathogens through windows, other pets, or even on your clothing. Ensuring they receive the appropriate vaccinations protects them from potential illnesses. Additionally, keeping your pet’s vaccinations up to date contributes to a healthier home environment for your family. Your Laguna Creek Veterinary Hospital veterinarian can advise which vaccinations are required or recommended for your pet based on their age, health, and lifestyle.
